Can you see real sumo in Kyoto?
Not a tournament, because Grand Sumo is staged in four other cities. Kyoto has a 70-minute sumo show with wrestlers, an English-speaking host, live matches and a ring challenge for selected guests.
Is the sumo show a real bout?
It is a demonstration with live matches. A recent reviewer on the booking page calls it informative and funny and says it is not a serious bout. Expect entertainment built on real technique.
Where are the real tournaments held?
Tokyo's Kokugikan stages three, in January, May and September. The other three go to Osaka in spring, Nagoya in summer and Fukuoka in autumn. Each lasts 15 days. Kyoto has none.
Can I step into the ring?
Selected guests may, says the booking page, but it gives no rule for the choice, so do not plan around a turn. Clothing should be comfortable and suited to physical activity.
How long does the show last?
70 minutes, per the booking page. Look to the calendar for starting times, which the page does not fix.
Do I need to know about sumo?
No. The booking page says no previous knowledge is needed, and an English-speaking host explains the rules and customs.
Can children come?
The booking page calls the show suitable for all ages.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing suitable for physical activity, in case you are picked for the ring challenge.
Is a meal included?
The booking page describes none. A different Kyoto sumo event lists meal options in its title, so read each page before you plan dinner.
Where do I meet?
In Nakagyō Ward, on the basement level. The booking page gives the address in Japanese: Shimizu-chō 359, north of Nijō. Use the map link on your confirmation.
How does this differ from the longer event near Marutamachi?
That event runs about 105 minutes to two hours and lists a mawashi try-on, a meal and photo options in its title. Its page says anyone who wants may challenge a wrestler. See the comparison guide for the full list.
Can I cancel?
Free up to 24 hours ahead, for tickets booked through GetYourGuide. Check the terms for your own date before you rely on them.
Does this site belong to the venue?
No. This site is an independent guide, not the website of the venue or the show operator, and it is not affiliated with them or with the wrestlers. Bookings are made with GetYourGuide.
